How to Mine an Asteroid and Get Filthy Rich Doing It

October 24, 2017 – Georgia Davies at Pink Frog Publications sent me this infographic about asteroid mining. Although this sounds like pure fantasy, companies here on Earth are well on the way to planning for such an eventuality. A few days ago I wrote about a proposed asteroid survey mission using a novel propulsion system called the ESAIL, as well as nanosats to assess the mineral content and map 300 bodies in the Asteroid Belt over three years. I have also written about Deep Space Industries who plan to launch their first in a series of Prospector space robots to mine the asteroids. And then there is Planetary Resources about to launch its first commercial deep space exploration telescope to begin identifying asteroids capable of providing water to future missions. With water, Planetary Resources plans to create a space mining infrastructure where humans can operate along with robotic miners, harvesting the wealth of asteroids.
