Gizmos & Gadgets: Smartphones Meet Mobile Wireless Storage with iLuun Air

October 12, 2016 – Yesterday on Kickstarter, a company named iLuun launched its campaign to raise money to bring to market a wireless flash drive that can move data and images from an Android or Apple mobile device, a laptop, a tablet, even a desktop computer, without cables, adapters or relying on the Cloud.

Called iLuun Air it is the world’s first wireless flash drive with up to 256 Gigabytes of storage. That’s enough storage for lots of movies, photos, songs and work-related stuff. iLuun Air is powered by a lithium-polymer (LIPO) battery that holds a 5-hour charge. It weighs 22 grams (3/4s of an ounce). It’s small enough to fit on a key ring (has the attachment for one), and comes with a USB 3.0 interface for conventional plugging in to computers.

iLuun Air creates its own wireless network providing multi-platform wireless streaming sharing content with up to 6 devices simultaneously. It seamlessly streams high-definition video, photos and music to any connected mobile device. It provides a one-step automatic backup and restore capability to give mobile phone users the ability to free up storage without losing content or having to transfer it to a computer or the Cloud. And it comes with an Apple or Android app for smartphones and tablets making it easy to operate.

When asked about why a wireless flash drive now, Harold Stewart, CEO and Founder of the Dallas, Texas-based company responded, “Consumers have been asking for a portable and convenient way to store and share files on-the-go.” Stewart believes “for the foreseeable future, our lives…continue to shift away from the desktop.” And he’s not wrong.

In 2014 a Gartner report predicted by 2018 we would be using smartphones and tablets for more than 50% of our communications and content consumption. In 2015 Christina Bonnington in an article in Wired predicted in two years smartphones would become our primary if not only computers. She quoted James Bruce of chip maker ARM, who stated “the only limitation we have now is just the hardware ecosystem.” And this year Google tells us that more than 70% of total search volume now happens on mobile devices. Well Bruce should be happy to see iLuun Air become a key part of the mobile hardware ecosystem.

Want to be one of the first iLuun Air adopters? Then go to Kickstarter where the company hopes to raise $50,000 over the next 35 days (it is already more than 35% there based on the time of this writing).

Important to know, unlike many Kickstarter campaigns, iLuun already has a product so the money you pledge will help them to ramp up production and distribution. The first shipments timetable shows March 2017 as the Kickstarter pledges delivery date. $49 gets you the early bird special, a 32- Gigabyte model. Or for $65, you get a 64 Gigabyte version. Need more storage then pledge $89 to get 128 Gigabytes and $119 for 256 Gigabytes. These are great prices for such a versatile invention.
